Chapter 6 ended with a very good question. In light of the devastation of the seal judgments, “who can stand?” (6:17). Chapter 7 answers that question. By God’s grace the first fruits of Israel, the 144,000, and a multitude from the whole earth can stand.
Let me also give you a heads up here. Most brothers understand the 144,000 to be Jewish evangelists who are let loose on the earth. They reason that this explains where the great multitude comes from in v. 9. The only problem with that view is that they are never identified as evangelists. I think it is a reasonable deduction. But later, in Rev. 14:4, they are identified as the “first fruits for God and the Lamb.” So, I am going with that!
