Introduction: The Turning Point of Providence

Esther 6 reflects one of the most striking moments of divine intervention in Scripture—and perhaps in all of God’s Word. As Haman schemes to bring about Mordecai’s downfall, the king, wide awake in the middle of the night, calls for the records to be read. It is then that the truth is uncovered: Mordecai had once bravely saved the king’s own life (Esther 6:1–2). In that moment of helplessness, God’s unseen hand is at work, guiding events in ways we might never expect. What seemed like a mere coincidence is, in reality, a God-incidence—God’s perfect movement behind the scenes, unfolding with purpose and grace, reminding us that our Lord is always present, working for His people even when we cannot see it.

God Honors the Faithful (vv. 1–11)

The irony of this chapter runs deep. The king cannot sleep, Haman rushes to kill Mordecai, and instead, he is ordered to parade Mordecai through the streets in honor. What Haman planned for humiliation becomes the very way of exaltation. Through this dramatic shift, God shows His sovereign power to lift the humble and humble the proud (cf. Prov. 21:1; Luke 1:52).

For us, this turn in the story serves as a gentle reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness to those who place their trust in Him. Mordecai’s steadfast loyalty to his conscience and his identity as a Jew exemplifies faithful living. Though his faithfulness went unnoticed for a time, the Lord’s eyes never left him, and His perfect timing ultimately reveals His justice. In God’s goodness, righteousness is vindicated, and steadfast faith is richly rewarded, encouraging us all to trust in His divine plan

Covenant Protection (v. 13)

When Haman recounts the day’s humiliation to his wife and friends, their response is astonishing:

“If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him.”

These Gentile observers recognized a truth that Haman had overlooked—that Israel’s God faithfully watches over His people wherever they may be, regardless of their shortcomings. He simply refuses to abandon them. The covenant promises made to Abraham (Gen. 12:1–3) and the Lord’s enduring faithfulness are well known, even among the nations. Their declaration in verse 13 is not mere superstition; it reflects a heartfelt acknowledgment of God’s special and sovereign protection over Israel, offering reassurance and hope.

This verse gently reminds us of a comforting and enduring truth: God’s covenant with Israel is unwavering and reflects His unchanging character. The same faithful God who watched over His chosen people in days past continues to steadfastly care for us today. His ways with Israel reveal His integrity and trustworthiness, qualities He also extends to His church. Just as He was faithful to His covenant people then, He remains faithful to all who are in Christ now—bringing hope and reassurance to our hearts.

Faith for Today

We live in tumultuous times, yet Esther 6 reminds us of the solid, immovable, stable rock we have to stand on, God’s unwavering love and sovereignty. His purposes are always at work behind the scenes—fulfilling His promises and honoring those who trust in Him. Just as God honored Mordecai and kept His covenant with Israel, He continues to care for us today with faithfulness and grace.

When you face injustice, misunderstanding, or what feels like defeat— and you probably will, maybe even today—remember that God’s hidden hand is at work. You can’t control the circumstances, but you can control yourself. Stay faithful and trust in the Lord.

Takeaway for Today

God’s providence is not always visible, but it is always reliable. He honors faithfulness, vindicates righteousness, and protects His people according to His covenant promises. Stand firm in faith—God is at work, even when the world cannot see it.

  1. Hello Dan,

Thank you for this lovely study. I have completed it and was blessed! Your lessons are inspiring and addictive.
In answer to the questions at the end of chapter 6…

I think God’s faithfulness to us, His church, is the same as to Israel. We who are in Christ are grafted in and have the same relationship that He     offered Israel.

I think Mordecai’s quiet faithfulness was a result of his humility and steadfast choice to follow God. As a result he was in a position to allow God     to use him for God’s purpose and lead him every step of the way.

Three steps I can take to trust God’s providence:

    1.
Stay in God’s Word and let it cleanse me and bring me clarity when the world and circumstances are crazy.
    2.
Walk and Live in close relationship with Jesus and choose Him and love Him more and more.
    3.
Stop and take a break from the chaos of “the moments” that challenge me to make a choice that will bring consequences and bring no glory to God. Then turn to Him and “Reset” my focus and Commitment to Him and Quietly choose to walk it out with Him.

    Thank you again for “Esther”,
