One of the lessons to learn from Israel’s long and tattered history is that the spiritual condition of the nation was determined by the spiritual condition of the leader. If the leader was a man after David’s own heart the the nation did well. Otherwise the nation of Israel was plagued with internal strife and attacked relentlessly by its enemies. In other words, every problem was a leadership problem. So too the church. In today’s reading the Lord provides us guidance and safeguards concerning church leaders. As the leaders, so the church. Will we heed the example of Israel and the teaching of the Lord in our local churches?
